CODES AND GUIDELINES: INTERNET

Canadian Association of Internet Providers Code of Conduct

The Canadian Association of Internet Service Providers (CAIP) is the organization that represents approximately ninety per cent of Canada’s Internet service provider (ISP) industry. In 1996, CAIP developed a voluntary Code of Conduct to promote self-regulation and good business practices among Canadian ISPs.

This Code of Conduct offers CAIP members guidelines for their internal policies on dealing with issues related to the content they host on their services, and carry across their networks. It contains seven principles and procedures, including requirements for CAIP members to: adhere to Canada's laws, and cooperate with law enforcement authorities

  • refrain from knowingly hosting illegal content
  • make reasonable efforts to investigate legitimate complaints about alleged illegal content or network abuse, and take appropriate action
  • respect and protect the privacy of their users, disclosing private information to others (such as law enforcement officials) only as required by law

Consumers should contact CAIP members directly if they have contravened the Code of Conduct. For a listing of CAIP members see the right sidebar.
