The current policy of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) regarding the portrayal of women in its programming was developed in 1979, in response to a government initiative to eliminate gender discrimination and promote the equality of women in Canadian society.
The CBC developed its Guidelines On Sex-Role Portrayal to ensure that appropriate language is used to refer to gender issues, and to make sure that both sexes are represented and portrayed equitably in both its programming and its commercials.
Viewers who wish to complain about CBC content that they feel may contravene the Guidelines on Sex-Role Portrayal should contact the Audience Relations Department at: 1-866-306-4636 or by e-mail (see right sidebar).
