The Cultural Diversity Guidelines were developed by the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) in response to the expectation of the broadcast regulatory body, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission’s (CRTC,) that conventional television broadcasters will make specific initiatives with regard to cultural diversity.
The guidelines encourage broadcasters to reflect the diverse communities they serve, and to practice cooperation, respect and openness towards all segments of society. Specifically, they contain commitments in the following areas:
- General Principles
- Hiring and Training A Diverse Workforce
- Community Outreach
- Interrelationship with Other Codes and Practices
Consumers who wish to make a complaint related to cultural diversity in broadcasting can do so under the CAB’s Code of Ethics. The Code is administered by the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC). To submit a complaint about broadcasting content or activities that may contravene the Code of Ethics, consumers can use the complaint forms on the CBSC and the CRTC Web sites. (See right side bar)
