CURRICULUM OUTCOMES: SUBJECT OVERVIEW

Ontario: Social Sciences and the Humanities

The Ontario social sciences curriculum includes expectations that incorporate media education themes. The grade nine and ten curriculum document: Social Sciences and the Humanities includes a section that demonstrates the complementary relationship between the critical thinking approach of media education and social sciences:

Both social science and humanities courses teach students fundamental skills, such as how to formulate appropriate questions, differentiate between evidence and opinion, recognize bias, and organize and communicate results effectively. Students are required to research information from a variety of sources, to think critically and make connections between the ideas and facts they gather, and to use that information to solve problems through both independent effort and collaborative work.

On the sidebar you will find outcome charts containing media-related learning expectations from the social sciences curriculum, with links to supporting resources on the Media Awareness Network site. As many of our lessons can be adapted to suit different grade levels and abilities, specific lessons may be listed for more than one grade. Teachers should also note that individual lessons often satisfy a number of expectations.
