Screen Teams

Screen Teams are families that write reviews of children's media, and then publish them in their school newsletters. The Screen Teams project was created by parents at an Ontario elementary school to help families sort through children's entertainment choices and discover what's best. Not only is this kind of information invaluable to parents, but watching a movie or a TV show and then critiquing it as a family is a great media literacy exercise for the home!

To set up a Screen Teams project in your school:

  • Involve your school principal and teachers. It won't work without their support.

  • Send home a Screen Teams Volunteer Form (see right sidebar) to all families in the school.

  • Send home an Information Sheet and some Reviewing Sheets (see right sidebar) to all the families who have indicated an interest in participating.

  • Ask that the reviews be returned regularly for printing in the school newsletter.

  • Approach your local newspaper or community newspaper and ask them if they would like to print your reviews.

  • Approach your local video store and ask them to display your movie reviews.
