 PARENTS TIPS: VIDEO GAMES

The Question: How do you manage video game playing in your house?

Controlling the amount of time spent playing video games is a constant challenge in our house. We have three boys -- aged 7, 12, 16. They all want to play at the same time and what the 17 year old plays is often not appropriate for the younger two. We don’t allow playing on week nights until homework is done and then they alternate turns each night. Weekends they are each allowed 3 hours in total, but they have to work out the schedule between themselves.
Sara, North Bay, Ontario

We check the rating on any game that comes into our house. Our son who is 10 can only play games rated E or and even then we find they are often quite violent. He understands what is acceptable and although he can play other games at friend’s houses and we would never know, he understands what the rules are at home and why we care.
