The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) is an independent council that was created by the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) to respond to public complaints about radio and television content. The CBSC was formally acknowledged by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) in 1991.
The Council promotes self-regulation in programming by Canada's private broadcasters. This is done through its five main objectives:
- to assist in the effective application of specific broadcast standards to the Canadian broadcasting system
- to inform the public of the existence of such standards, and the self-regulatory system established by Canada's private broadcasters
- to provide a recourse for members of the public regarding the application of these standards, and provide complaint resolution
- to render thoughtful, independent, objective decisions, and ensure that the public has access to these
- to inform broadcasters of emerging social trends (including developments in the Codes and their administration), and suggest ways to deal with them
