Consumer Protection BC classifies publicly exhibited films prior to their release. Classification categories include General, Parental Guidance, 14A, 18A and Restricted. There is an administrative agreement in place by which the Government of Saskatchewan's Consumer Protection Branch adopts the classifications provided by Consumer Protection BC.
Consumer Protection BC provides classification advisories. These are short descriptive pieces that inform the public of content determinative to a film's classification. Theatres must display the classifications and advisories for their films. Common advisories include violence, nudity, coarse language. Consumer Protection BC does not limit the scope of advisories to a finite list.
Consumer Protection BC provides detailed decision summaries for all films. The summaries, available at , explain the classification decision for each film including a comprehensive list of any relevant content.
Here are the ratings and what they mean.
Consumer Protection BC regulates adult home video (i.e. explicit sexual depictions). Licensed retailers must have a Consumer Protection BC decal attached to their adult product. The decal indicates the product's particular title and title number. This system protects the industry from piracy. Please note that home video product, that does not depict adult content, is outside of Consumer Protection BC's scope (this includes retail, broadcasting, and streaming).
