Anti-Semitic Incidents in Canada

The following is a record of reported incidents for the year 1998 as collected by the B'nai Brith Society of Canada. The incidents may have been reported directly to the offices of B'nai Brith, or may have been reported by other services. Crime experts strongly suggest that only a small percentage, (approximately 10 per cent) of hate crimes or harassment is ever reported to any source.

  • There were 240 anti-Semitic incidents reported to the League for Human Rights in 1998. This represents an increase of 14 per cent from the 212 incidents in 1997.

  • Harassment comprised the largest portion of incidents in 1998 with a total of 198 incidents. This is an increase of 29 per cent from the 154 cases of harassment in 1997. Harassment includes the distribution of hate propaganda; however, this figure does not include incidents of anti-Semitism spread over the Internet.

  • The number of reported incidents of anti-Semitic vandalism was 42, down 28 per cent from the 58 incidents reported last year.
