Research by National Opinion Polls in Great Britain shows 10.6 million adults used some kind of Internet service in 1998, from a total population of 59 million.
There are 10 900 new users logging onto the Internet every day in Great Britain, compared to 9 900 in Germany and 2 700 in France.
By December 1998, six million people had used the Internet from home, compared with 3.4 million in December 1997.
The number of people using the Internet from the workplace rose 54 per cent, from 3.5 million to 5.3 million.
Seventy-three per cent of users claimed to have gone online in the four weeks preceding the study, compared to 60 percent from a study six months prior.
