Hate on the Web

  • In March 1995, former Klansman Don Black put up the first neo-Nazi web site. In March 1998, 163 active sites across North America publicize racial hatred.
  • 29 of these espouse Klan beliefs; 39 are neo-Nazi sites; 27 are the work of racist skinheads; 25 promote Christian Identity, an anti-Semitic and racist religion; and 43 others push various other hate ideologies.
  • Almost half of these web sites represent actual organizations that can be joined, or from whom racist materials can be ordered.
  • Since the total number of hate groups in the U.S. is around 474 (up 20 per cent from 1996), more than one third have already made the leap to cyberspace.
