The U.S.-based Network Wizards' Internet Domain Survey estimates the global rate of Internet expansion at between 40 and 50 per cent per year.
In February 1998, there were nearly 30 million connected computers in 240 countries. Growth in developing countries like China is greater than average.
More than 70 per cent of connected computers are in Canada and the U.S., where about a quarter of adults have online access. The third-most-wired country in the world is Australia.
