According to the most recent survey by the Internet Domain Survey, 36,739,000 individual hosts were found in July 1998.  Each online host represents an individual machine connected to the Internet.

In their January 1998 survey, 29,670,000 individual hosts were found.  In July 1997, 19,540,000 hosts were counted -- a little more than half of the current number.
