Reports from local newspapers around Europe converged at the 5th Interactive Publishing Conference in November 1998, and all showed enormous growth in European Internet use.
According to BDZV, the German newspaper publishers' association, there are seven million Germans online - over 10 per cent of the German population. This makes Germany the largest European Internet market.

Spain's most visited Internet site is El Pais, a Spanish newspaper, with 70 000 hits a day.
According to the Swedish newspaper Dagbladet Online, Internet penetration in Scandinavia is over 30 per cent.
