Internet Surge (Europe)

Reports from local newspapers around Europe converged at the 5th Interactive Publishing Conference in November 1998, and all showed enormous growth in European Internet use.

  • According to BDZV, the German newspaper publishers' association, there are seven million Germans online - over 10 per cent of the German population. This makes Germany the largest European Internet market.

  • The German market expects to see 18 to 25 million Euros of online advertising revenue by the end of 1998.

  • Belgium reports 420 000 weekly Internet users -- four per cent of its population. Internet ad revenue in Belgium is expected to reach 1.87 million Euros, according to Belgian newspaper Zakelijk Internet Uitgeversbedrijf Tijd N.V.

  • Spain's most visited Internet site is El Pais, a Spanish newspaper, with 70 000 hits a day.

  • According to the Swedish newspaper Dagbladet Online, Internet penetration in Scandinavia is over 30 per cent.
