A study on the Internet's impact on American society by the Stanford Institute for the Quantitative Study of Society has revealed that the more people spend on line, the less time they spend with real people.
-
About two thirds of Internet users surveyed said they spent less than five hours a week online.
-
The more years of experience people had using the internet, the more hours they spent online.
-
Sixty percent of the regular Internet users surveyed say the Internet has reduced their TV viewing. One third said they spend less time reading newspapers.
-
An activity that tended to increase with frequent Internet use was work. Sixteen per cent of respondents said they were working more hours at home without cutting back at the office. Another eight per cent reported increases in time spent working at home and at the office. Only four per cent of survey participants said they cut down on their hours at the office.

Some of the possible benefits of spending more time on the Internet may include spending less time stuck in traffic, shopping in malls, and watching television.
