Many 16-year-olds have part-time jobs to pay for the latest fashions. Alannah Klein's part-time job is designing the latest fashions.

Alannah Klein is forging a name for herself as a hot new talent in the world of fashion design yet - she's still a Grade 10 student at a local high school. With a little cash and a lot of guts, she's turned her talents into a successful small business designing her signature knee-length skirts and dresses. Last summer, she caught the eye of one of the organizers at Girlie Fair, the travelling all-woman rock festival. This year, she'll be travelling across Eastern Canada with the Girlie Fair gang, taking her signature look with her.

On tour, Alannah will have a tent of her own to showcase and sell her designs at four Girlie Fair concerts in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax. She'll be in good corporate company - Revise Jeans, Spokeswagon Auto and Sunstuck Coffee will have similar venues. She hopes this opportunity to take her business on the road will garner her some major exposure, especially in fashion-forward Toronto and Montreal.

I'd like to propose a 1,000-word feature on Alannah Klein's Girlie venture. I plan to travel with Ms. Klein, to get an intimate feel for how her big break is working out. For background and analysis, I also plan to interview Janice Weeks, the festival organizer who first noticed Alannah's designs; Alice Klein, her manager and mother; Ottawa designer Jean-Pierre Grouvé; Talia Henry, a buyer at a trendy Toronto clothing store; and a number of other experts on the fashion scene.

As for my own qualifications: I'm the features editor and regular arts columnist for the McMurphy Gazette, weekly newspaper of McMurphy Academy, where I'm in Grade 11. I've been profiling local artists for this publication and the Kanata Standard-Courier for over a year now. I've enclosed some of my clippings for your consideration.

I look forward to discussing this story proposal with you in more detail.

Thanks for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Danica Greggson
