Advertising Activities for Sparks

Watching for "Weasel Words"
Use this handout to talk about common words used by advertisers that can mislead children. With help from their parents, have the girls keep a log of "weasel words" in TV commercials.

Cereal and Junk Food Advertising
As every parent knows, most food advertisements aimed at kids aren't pitching fruit and vegetables. Use this handout to teach your Sparks the tricks advertisers use to make cereal and junk food seem so appealing.

Conduct a blind "Taste Test"

Have your girls conduct their own "Brand Name" face-off. Use popular foods such as soft drinks, potato chips, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate milk mixes or french fries. Be sure to include cheaper, generic brands along with assorted name brands.

Food for Thought
Have you ever wondered how they make food look so good in advertisements? Sparks will have fun with this handout which explains the tricks of food photography.

Rules for Advertising to Kids
This handout explains, in children's language, what Canadian advertisers can and can't do when advertising to children. Have the girls become "ad detectives" by watching commercials to see if the advertisers are following the rules.
