To offer a safe place for children to use the Internet, it is important for libraries to make the public, parents and young people aware of what activities and content are available and what risks are involved.
In this Toolkit, you will find information, advice and other resources to promote the leadership of libraries in educating the public about the Internet. You will also be provided access to information about the Web Awareness Workshop Series for Librarians, which includes a public education workshop called Parenting the Net Generation for parents and others in the community involved in the stewardship of young people.
Within the Toolkit, you will find posters and short texts that can be sent, personalized or used as you wish. Please ensure that you review the Canadian Library Association Usage Guidelines (see right sidebar) before you create other documents that you use to discuss these issues in public or with the media.
There is also series of frequently asked questions (FAQs), which were developed so that you can respond to the questions and concerns of the public and the media on issues that involve the use of the Internet in public libraries and children’s access to inappropriate materials when they are surfing.
